The First Nine Months

Progress

We were looking at how our funds were behaving, nine months after the AGM, and the results show just how well you have done! – the Village Hall has more in the bank now than it did in September. Thank you to all the community who have supported the Hall by gifts of time, money or cooking – or just by supporting the events.

We created a poster to provide some more detail on “the money”. You can see it if you click this link…The First Nine Months

More Events Planned

PS – the poster also talks about new events, like The Kaber Show and barbecue on 7th September,  Bingo and Hot-dogs, on 6th July and plans for “club nights” on Thursdays all this alongside Craft club on Tuesdays and Coffee Mornings on the third Saturday of each month!

Well Done Kaber!

What a great community you are, this week has seen a demonstration of the many ways pulling together makes life fun…

It’s been a busy week in the village hall (and the village in general).

We had a coffee morning a week ago (Saturday morning), well attended with more than twenty arriving, and an abundant supply of cakes (it would seem that cheese scones are more popular than blueberry muffins – a surprise to the author!)

On Monday we had a Domino Drive, (very well organised by Lillian & James.) This was also well attended and according to one member of the household “it was quite competitive” – and she won a prize (although it was the “booby” prize 😢 )

Then yesterday afternoon we held a Family Bingo event run by Anne and Dan from Heggerscale, who also provided all the bingo “machinery”. I’ve never heard a quieter group of children than when Anne said “eyes down” at the start of each round. (although the arrival of the hotdogs also seemed to suppress the chattering!) Lots of prizes were won too, and it was nice to hear requests that we run another one soon!…. We might be needing a bigger hall, as it was completely packed!

Aside from lots of community spirit, these events also raised a bunch of funds for the hall. You’ll be pleased to hear that the Bingo raised £128, when added to £74.55 at the coffee morning and £107 for the dominoes evening that’s a grand total of £309.55 👏👏👏 Well done all round.

This fund raising more than paid for the new secondary double glazing we installed on the rear window – so hopefully the hall will be cheaper to heat (and warmer too)….

… and on that note; another “thank you” to Lillian for persuading Alistair Hanna from Brough to come and inspect the gas heater in the hall – it was pronounced “good”, so now we will get the old gas tank removed, and new bottles fitted and he will come back and service and commission it…

…and in yet more heat-related news, Jason Winder came and fitted additional loft insulation, so now we have the recommended 300mm – so a warm thank you Jason .

In wider news, we understand that B4RN has raised all the money needed to start on the installation of our all-fibre gigabit internet, so we will be joining the internet revolution within the year (hopefully). Thanks go to a number of volunteers around the village for making this happen, with notable mentions to Mike Bidgeway for his stoic and persistent campaigning over the years, to Liz Staley for galvanising the community into supporting the project and Julie Lane for all the work on way-leaves – well done all.

What’s Next?

Whist! With a “learn to play Whist” session on the 10th of May at 7:30pm – this time for a Brain Tumour charity – another “Fisher-related Production!”…. come and be educated, fed, raffled and maybe even a few more games of Dominoes are promised!

So, you all deserve a pat on the back, for pulling together to make fine things happen – Well Done Kaber!

Learn to play Whist

Friday 10th May 7:30 PM – £3/head

To raise funds for the Brain Tumour Charity Lillian Fisher’s god-daughter is organising a whist evening for beginners, novices and experienced players. Below is a poster (photographed at the Co-Op) which explains all… come along and have some fun…

A volunteer painter?

As you might know, one of the Hall’s rear windows is only single glazed – so adds significantly to the heating cost and is very drafty.

Just before the primer went on….

Replacing the whole window would be expensive, so we decided to fit secondary glazing (hence the large sheet of perspex on the floor in the hall.) We have all the materials to install this, we have sanded off the old window and primed it, but now it just needs a coat of white gloss before we can do the job,

The problem is that your friendly-local window fixer (Malcolm) is REALLY bad at painting and has a steamboat he needs to get back on Windermere.

So, if you have the time could someone PLEASE volunteer to give the window a coat of paint please, we can provide paint and brushes if needed… nothing fancy, just to preserve the wood… .Thank you …

It would be good to get it done in the next few days, so we can fit the glazing, or there won’t me much room for the coffee morning or other events … Speak to any Committee Member if you need the paint!

An Update on Electricity & Heating

We have been keeping a close eye on our biggest expense (Electricity for heating), and we wanted to tell everyone how we are doing… here’s an analysis we compiled for the Committee:

Heating the Hall:

An update on 11th February 2024

Forecast

In November we we did some analysis of the electricity costs since the 6th November (Called “Heating the Hall“) , Our analysis & the resulting forecast said the following:

Loo Heaters: They appear to cost around £15/week if they ran non-stop, but our best guess from the numbers is that they actually have been on about 30% (about £5/week). This cost will go up and down depending on the weather”.

Storage Heaters: We have run them at low (2 on the input control) at this level they “keep the chill off” and seem to sustain the building at about 9-degrees. Set this way they seem to use about £15/week.” to that figure we need to add the costs of turning them up for an evening event, and my estimates were: “A similar evening event using fan heaters and turning the storage heaters up for one night would cost about £28.

The Actual Outcome

So based on that estimate for the 69 days between 28th November and 5th February we would have forecast costs as follows:

  • 11 events @ £28:00/night = £308

  • Loo heaters 9.8 weeks @ £5:00/week =£49.28

  • Storage heaters 9.8 weeks @ £15/week =£147.86

  • total forecast cost = £505:14

The actual cost came out as £469:49 (plus £98 standing charges (pro-rata)).

Income since 29th November

income

So, the net outcome is that we have an income of £381.31and heating bills of £505.14 – so while that seems quite bad, the warmer weather is coming….

…. But if we had had the gas heater running we would have forecast the costs to have been £257 as opposed to £505 (so pretty much halving our running costs), and we would have covered our electricity bill from the events we held and your generosity.

Do you know a gas engineer who can come and recommission the gas heater that was disconnected??
