Club and Social Night Thursdays
A new idea for those shorter days

Over the Autumn, we are going to try running informal “themed” meetings. A rotating pattern of “Club and Social Nights” on different subjects. So, Each Thursday evening, from 6:30 – 8:30pm, there will be a club night – these will have a theme, but also just be a social night for chatting with refreshments. 

Club & Social Nights will repeat in a reasonably regular sequence.

The plans for the rest of Autumn are as follows:

24th OctoberGames and puzzle night: Bring a favourite game or puzzle, or simply come along and join in.

7th NovemberArt night: Bring your own project or come and join in with the activities on the night – no talent required!
14th NovemberAir Fryer Demonstration: Looking for ideas for recipes for your air fryer or deciding if one is for you? Join us for inspiration.
21st NovemberMake friends with your smartphone: Want to know about how something works or how to make best use of your smartphone? Join us!
28th NovemberTalk night: topic TBC… do you have a talk you could give
5th DecemberDomino Drive: Just Dominoes and chat

 

Arrangements

Entry will be £2.50 per night to cover the cost of heating and refreshments.
Get in touch with any of the Trustees or Working Group members, or email booking@kabervh.com if you have any ideas or would like to run an evening.

Delayed Start Date for Club Nights!

As we have announced here we are planning to start regular Thursday Club Nights.

Our original  intent was to start these on the Thursday after the AGM, but we are all living such busy, exciting lives that we have had to postpone the first one until the 3rd October, sorry.

As we have planned, this first one will be a “computer night” aiming to help people with their technology problems from writing an email to shopping on-line. So, bring your questions and problems (just the computer ones please!) and we will try to find an answer, either that night or on the next computer night.

As you can see in the flyer we have other thoughts on what might make good club night themes, but if you come along with other ideas that would be good too…

For example we could have an off-site one, to turn your apples and pears into juice to drink or turn into cider or perry, using the press we made last year – just let Malcolm or Louise know if you are interested in this – and freeze your fruit first, it lets you get more juice from the squeeze!!!..

Well, what a day!

You are a very skilled and supportive community. Thank you to all who entered, organised, loaned things and helped… And we even got some sunshine (as the pictures show. Wendy and Damon were busy with their cameras to capture the day – enjoy 🙂

Village Hall Trust 2024 AGM Agenda

Please remember the Village Hall Trust AGM is on Monday 16th September 2024 at Kaber Village Hall at 7:00pm.

We will provide a complete pack of information for all attendees on the night (reports, accounts etc.). However, please find attached the agenda for the meeting <click this link to view> . This document explains why the meeting is in two parts and what will be covered.

Please do put this date in your diaryi in your diaries.

A new idea for those shorter days

Thursday night is club night!

Over the Autumn, we are going to try running informal “themed” meetings. A rotating pattern of “Club Nights”.on different subjects.

So, each Thursday evening, from 6:30 – 8:30pm, there will be a club night. These will each be focused on a particular theme or objective and  will repeat in sequence.

You can see our initial ideas for “themes”  in the attached flyer, but we would love your ideas, support & feedback for other club nights you would be able to organise/run/attend once every 6-8 weeks or so.

Our first club night is planned for October and that’s currently planned to be a Computer Night night!! So, bring computer your questions!!

Tell your friends, and come along….

Current Club Night Theme Ideas:

  1.  Games and puzzles night: come along to join in with games and puzzles or bring a game you’d like to play with someone. If you’d rather watch, that’s fine too – just come along and enjoy the company.
  2. Social Book night: bring your book along for a chat – it could be about the book you are reading or the weather – it’s up to you. But after a catch up, then we will read in companionable silence – well calmness with a cuppa anyway.
  3.  Computer help night: want to learn how to send an email? Do an online shop? Get a spreadsheet to add up for you? Make your tablet/phone/computer behave better, Learn about online safety? Install anti-virus software? Come along for friendly support and advice and bring your questions! (be ready for our new B4RN broadband!).
  4.  Paint, draw and sip: want to try your hand at drawing or painting with company? Bring along whatever equipment you have, even if it’s just some paper and a pencil, and have a try at some still life or continue working on your own masterpiece, whilst sipping on a cuppa with friends.
  5.  Talks: An evening talk from local organisations or people with interesting stories to tell.
  6.  Maybe a making music night (singers?, yuke players? recorders?)
  7. 7. A Cookery club? A Gardening Club?

Kaber Village Show & BBQ – 7th September

Hello all, we are excited  to announce this year’s Kaber Village Show. Which is being held at the Village Hall on the 7th September, with a BBQ !

Details

Kaber Village Hall Show is open to residents of Kaber parish and their families.

The timings are as follows:

Dates & Times

  • Show Date – Saturday 7th September 2024
  • Location – Kaber Village Hall
  • Entries close – Friday 23rd August
  • Entries to arrive between –  8am – 9.30am
  • Entries to be collected between  – 3-4pm
  • All classes judging – 10am
  • Open to public from – 11am
  • BBQ food from 12noon (please let Chair@kaberVH.com or Secretary@kaberVH.com know approx numbers please)

Rules

  1.  All entries must be the competitor’s own work.
  2. No entries should have been entered into another show.
  3. The judge’s decision is final, all disputes to be
    settled by the Kaber Village Hall Committee and not subject to a Court of Law.
  4. Entries cost 50p for all classes with the exception of children’s classes which are FREE (children entering adult classes are to pay the entry fee of 50p)
  5. In the event of classes having 3 or less entries only 1st place will be given.

Prize money

  • 1st – £1.50,
  • 2nd -£1.00 ,
  • 3rd -75p

Classes (see schedule for details)

  • Industrial (baking)
  • Miscellaneous (crafting)
  • Photography
  • Children’s classes (for under 16s) (craft, writing, painting, handwriting etc.)
  • Dogs (working and pet)
  • Gardening (flowers and produce)

Please do enter and support your show, or come along to see your  community’s work and stay for the barbecue.  (Hopefully you already knew about this event, as we dropped off paper copies to all the houses and farms in the village.)

What a great community you are, this week has seen a demonstration of the many ways pulling together makes life fun…

It’s been a busy week in the village hall (and the village in general).

We had a coffee morning a week ago (Saturday morning), well attended with more than twenty arriving, and an abundant supply of cakes (it would seem that cheese scones are more popular than blueberry muffins – a surprise to the author!)

On Monday we had a Domino Drive, (very well organised by Lillian & James.) This was also well attended and according to one member of the household “it was quite competitive” – and she won a prize (although it was the “booby” prize 😢 )

Then yesterday afternoon we held a Family Bingo event run by Anne and Dan from Heggerscale, who also provided all the bingo “machinery”. I’ve never heard a quieter group of children than when Anne said “eyes down” at the start of each round. (although the arrival of the hotdogs also seemed to suppress the chattering!) Lots of prizes were won too, and it was nice to hear requests that we run another one soon!…. We might be needing a bigger hall, as it was completely packed!

Aside from lots of community spirit, these events also raised a bunch of funds for the hall. You’ll be pleased to hear that the Bingo raised £128, when added to £74.55 at the coffee morning and £107 for the dominoes evening that’s a grand total of £309.55 👏👏👏 Well done all round.

This fund raising more than paid for the new secondary double glazing we installed on the rear window – so hopefully the hall will be cheaper to heat (and warmer too)….

… and on that note; another “thank you” to Lillian for persuading Alistair Hanna from Brough to come and inspect the gas heater in the hall – it was pronounced “good”, so now we will get the old gas tank removed, and new bottles fitted and he will come back and service and commission it…

…and in yet more heat-related news, Jason Winder came and fitted additional loft insulation, so now we have the recommended 300mm – so a warm thank you Jason .

In wider news, we understand that B4RN has raised all the money needed to start on the installation of our all-fibre gigabit internet, so we will be joining the internet revolution within the year (hopefully). Thanks go to a number of volunteers around the village for making this happen, with notable mentions to Mike Bidgeway for his stoic and persistent campaigning over the years, to Liz Staley for galvanising the community into supporting the project and Julie Lane for all the work on way-leaves – well done all.

What’s Next?

Whist! With a “learn to play Whist” session on the 10th of May at 7:30pm – this time for a Brain Tumour charity – another “Fisher-related Production!”…. come and be educated, fed, raffled and maybe even a few more games of Dominoes are promised!

So, you all deserve a pat on the back, for pulling together to make fine things happen – Well Done Kaber!
